Antony
Antony was a part of Rome's second triumvirate. He ruled alongside Octavian and Lepidus Before the triumvirate was formed Antony was an ally of Caesar. A few years after Caesar's death the Roman empire was split between Octavian and Antony. Octavian ruled the west and Antony took controll of the east.
Cleopatra
Cleopatra was ruler of Egypt from the time she was twelve till her suicide. Though she was ostracized by her brother during their co-regency she allied with Caesar to have him killed. Her relationship with Caesar produced an child who she then made he co-regent in replacement of her brother.
Historical Significance of Relationship
Antony and Cleopatra's relationship was the physical representation of the relationship between Egypt and the eastern Roman empire. Their relationship and ultimate suicide led to the Roman take over of Egypt and Octavian's rise to power as dictator.
